Episode #75 – This Positive ID thing just won’t end
I wrap up with Positive ID issue with some current events with my caseload. They are pretty good examples of why positive ID and a good game plan are so important.

Hey Scott,
Another great episode. I’ve just finished listening to the last 5 as I’ve been off working an undercover job. You’ve been speaking about positively identifying someone and the fact you’ve door knocked the premises. Would you mind shedding some light on the pretexts you use in a situation like this?
Keep up the great work!!!
Regards
Ben.
Hi Scott
Just been listening to your Episode 75 podcast where you spoke about wanting to hear from new PIs and those considering setting up in business regarding training issues.
Well despite around 15 years starting as a tracer and building up to trademark piracy and background reporting I am now out on my own for the first time.
Ahh the freedom!
Ooof! the looming poverty, tax issues and having to do EVERYTHING myself.
Undercover work and surveillance really isn’t my thing. (never could pee in to a bottle while simultaneously calling in a report, peeping through a curtain, finding my camera and NOT rock the van)
As far as training issues are concerned I see a lot of people new to the game have one or two faults.
Firstly those who have been employed in an investigative role often think there is nothing to learn. Foolish but true.
Secondly training costs are often seen as a cost rather than an investment that will provide a return. Being new in the business means that every penny spent on training is a penny not spent on food and it can be tough to eat!
I enjoy your surveillance podcasts as they allow me to better understand an area that I do not work in and therefore understand what it is that I am asking subcontractors to do for me.
My guess is that others would enjoy areas that they are not directly involved in such as pre-employment screening.
I think the biggies and most likely to encourage payment would be information on growing a new business. Items such as how to market and cost different services, agent to agent etiquette, how best to add services to your portfolio and which are the most complimentary to ongoing services, cases involving foreigners or having an overseas element, obtaining and using ancillary services such as graphology or DNA analysis.
One question I have asked EVERY self employed professional over the last six months has been “how did you screw up when you started?” Every one has had those learning experiences.
Well that’s my take on it
Keep up the good work
Tony
