Episode 32 – Researchers? We don’t need no stinkin’ researchers! Or do we?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  This week, a brief discussion on the use of document researchers and some questions about carrying a weapon while working.  The curbside investigator has questions but no answers?  You bet!  Help me decide if I need to ‘pack iron’ while on the job.

And a free plug to researchers at DCW and Associates and Guardian Private Investigations.

    Hello,
Episode 32 mentioned in brief, input on carrying a firearm as a Private Investigator. Normally investigators depending on the state the business is conducted in, have to show cause and or necessity to carry a concealed firearm. Among the many criminal cases I conduct, most are homicide and drug related. Thus when engaged in an investigation, circumstances are different from merely passing through neigborhoods and activities of question. Once questions are asked and it is known you are seeking information, there are those in favor and opposed to your intervention. This can on occasion be life threatening.

Make no mistake about it, while P.I.’s are in fact private citizens, the assignments they engage in are very similar to that of the police, though implemented under different legislative measures. Carrying a firearm in this line of work has more to do with street smarts and a calm co existence to the environment. One should also be very informed on the use of force, deadly or otherwise, notwithstanding, proficiency in the operation and handling of the firearm itself.

Great podcast. If you are eligible, get licensed to carry a gun. Train with a gun. It is a tool like any other. When you need it and it is not there you will miss it. It may not happen very often, but it will happen at least once.

I have just started in the profession. I retired after 25 years as a street officer and investigator with Houston PD. During that time I had a weapon on me or with me all the time, and there were times I was glad I did. Lucky for me I fall under the new Federal firearm license act for retired officers. There fore I am allowed to carry in any state in the U.S or it’s territories. (So far)

Here in Vegas, you are licensed to carry as a PI or your not. Right now I am working for a PI ferm that does not have the insurance coverage for licensed carry, even though the owner is retired federal investigator. It could very well cause a problem if the local PD pull up on my serveillance,
who by the way can not take a joke at all, and see my unarmed license while I am armed under the Federal license. The Federal government say’s I can, but the locals say I can’t. Go figure.

I do carry mainly for self protection, but after 25 years I do feel that I know when the line is being crossed. It depends on how you act or react and how much common sence is used. If you want the weapon to make you feel 10 foot tall, then you will more than likely pay the price. I would suggest, use your head before you use the weapon.

I have been in the business for 4 years and am just now getting my conceal permit. I have been meaning to get my conceal license all these years but have been too “busy”. You may have heard of the shooting that happened here in Salt Lake recently. The Salt Lake shooting has caused me to get off my behind and get it done. The day after the shooting, I set up my class and have just completed it. Most likely, I will never need to use a gun but in that slim chance it would sure be nice to have.
