Episode 15-Tailing tidbits and some listener feedback
Personal commitments have kept me away for a few weeks but I’m trying to get caught up on work and get back into the podcasting ‘zone’ so stick with me here. In this episode, I talk a bit about the fine art and voodo science of vehicular tailing. It’s general information, but important. I also read some listener email and feedback. It’s good stuff and I love it! Thanks everyone for both your ideas and your support.

Do you use GPS systems for tailing? This is generally illegal in the UK, more so than it is in America, but generally if its a wife wanting her husband tailed and she also owns the car then there may be cause to allow the fitting of a GPS tracker.

There’s some laws here in the States regarding use of GPS and as you mentioned, it usually comes down to who owns the car. I have used GPS in the past, but physical surveillance is much better. GPS can show you where a person is to a degree, but it can’t tell you that they parked, walked down the street and went into a building a block away. What it IS good for is picking up a tail if you lose them. That takes a huge amount of pressure of the surveillance operative.
Hey Scott,
Thanks for the mention in this episode. I sound like a bit of a stalker though with all these emails! *laugh* I hope your listener numbers are climbing.
I’m just about to finish my course here in Australia and get out there. But I find experience seems to be the key. Any chance of an episode on tips for rookies, or what we should aim at in regards to starting out and getting some experience?
Anyway, keep up the great work!
Regards
Ben.

You are correct in assessing the problems of So Cal traffic vehicle surveillance. Depending on the case assignment and how much the client is willing to pay, I have always tried to have a second pair of eyes in the vehicle who’s job it is to watch the subject while the driver watches traffic. This way safety is the primary consideration. Also whenever two people are working a surveillance and one is out of the vehicle for any reason ie restroom break etc. should the subject take off the driver cannot pick up his partner, he/she follows the subject and plans for a pick up at a later time. This should be understood prior to selecting a partner to work with. He/she may have to use public transportation, cab etc. to catch up. Cell phones are invaluable. DON’T drive a unique vehicle in a unique color. I used to drive a very generic Honda.
